What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Aldactazide (Spironolactone/Hydrochlorothiazide) is a combination medication used to treat high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and cirrhosis of the liver.

The active ingredients in Aldactazide are both diuretics. Spironolactone inhibits the activity of aldosterone in your kidneys, while hydrochlorothiazide inhibits sodium and water reabsorption. Both drugs cause increased urine output.

Cautions

Do not use Aldactazide if you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients or sulfonamide derivatives.

Do not take Aldactazide if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Anuria
  • Acute renal insufficiency
  • Significant kidney impairment
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Hyperkalemia
  • Addison’s disease
  • Acute severe liver failure

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or considering becoming pregnant, talk to your doctor about the risks of using Aldactazide.

Aldactazide can cause hyperkalemia. Avoid taking unprescribed potassium supplements while using Aldactazide.

Hydrochlorothiazide could activate or worsen your lupus erythematosus. Discuss your risk with your doctor.

Hydrochlorothiazide can cause acute transient myopia and acute angle-closure glaucoma.
