What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Chemical Name: ATORVASTATIN (a-TORE-va-sta-tin) Lipitor is used with diet changes to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood. It works by slowing the production of cholesterol in the body. Buildup of cholesterol and fats along the walls of the blood vessels decreases blood flow and, therefore, the oxygen supply to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body. Lowering blood levels of cholesterol and fats may help to prevent heart disease, angina, strokes, and heart attacks.

Directions

Each health care professional may prescribe medications differently according to a patient's medical history and condition to ensure that they are getting the best possible results. Typically, LIPITOR is usually taken once a day, at the same time, with or without food. LIPITOR starts to work in approximately 2 weeks. It is advisable that patients check their cholesterol levels throughout their treatment with LIPITOR, as dosage levels may be changed based on the test results.

It is advised to stop using LIPITOR if you:

  • become allergic to LIPITOR or any of its ingredients
  • have liver disease
  • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding
  • experience uncontrolled seizures
  • experience an electrolyte imbalance (high/low potassium levels in your blood)
  • have severely low blood pressure
  • have a severe infection or illness
  • have had surgery or a medical emergency.

Strictly follow the instructions indicated on your prescription label and as given by your health care professional. Do not ingest more or less medication than recommended. Do not change the dosage or stop taking your medication without your health care professional's approval.

Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Cautions

Although LIPITOR has many benefits to helping patients combating high cholesterol, it may not be the right treatment for you. Before taking Lipitor, advise your health care professional if you have diabetes, a thyroid disorder, muscle pain or weakness, a history of liver or kidney disease, or if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily. Additionally, some medications should not be taken with LIPITOR. Advise your health care professional about all the medicines you are taking including prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins and/or herbal supplements.

Side Effects

The moderate side effects may include mild muscle pain, diarrhea, and mild nausea. In case of unexplained muscle pain, weakness or tenderness, fever or feel more tired than usual, allergic reactions, nausea and vomiting, and loss of appetite. If you pass brown or dark-colored urine, skin and whites of your eyes become yellow, or if you experience severe stomach pain or liver problems, immediately consult your physician.
