What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Lanoxin is a medication used to help people with heart problems, such as heart failure or irregular heartbeats like atrial fibrillation. Its main ingredient is Digoxin, which comes from the leaves of a plant called Digitalis lanata. Digoxin helps the heart beat more strongly and keeps the heartbeat steady and regular. Healthcare providers may prescribe Lanoxin to both adults and children who need help with heart function or who have abnormal heart rhythms.

Directions

Lanoxin is taken by mouth once a day at about the same time each day. You can take it with food or on an empty stomach. Most adults take between 0.0625 mg and 0.25 mg each day, but the exact amount prescribed depends on things like age, how well the kidneys work, and the condition being treated. Your healthcare provider may change your dose depending on how you react to the medicine and your blood test results. It’s important to follow a healthcare provider’s directions while taking Lanoxin.

Ingredients

Lanoxin contains the active ingredient Digoxin.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy to any ingredient in the medication
  • Ventricular fibrillation

Cautions

  • Before taking Lanoxin you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Lanoxin can affect how electrical signals move through the heart. In people with certain conditions like Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome or existing heart block, it may increase the risk of life-threatening heart rhythms. People with sinus node problems or slow heart rates may also be at higher risk.
  • Toxicity is possible. Children may show signs like unusual heart rhythms or low heart rate. The risk of toxicity goes up in older adults, people with kidney problems, or those with low potassium or magnesium levels. Blood tests are often used to check drug levels and kidney function.
  • Lanoxin may increase the risk of abnormal rhythms during procedures like electrical cardioversion. Your healthcare provider may lower the dose or pause treatment before the procedure.
  • Lanoxin is generally not recommended for people who recently had a heart attack, have heart inflammation (myocarditis), or have certain types of heart failure with preserved function. In these cases, the drug may reduce how well the heart pumps or cause other problems.
  • If your calcium levels are too low, this drug may not work as well. Your doctor may need to correct this before or during treatment.
  • People with thyroid issues may respond differently to Lanoxin. Those with low thyroid activity may need a lower dose, while those with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) may not respond well to the medication until the thyroid condition is treated.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Lanoxin tend to occur at higher doses and may include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, or confusion. Some people may also experience abdominal discomfort, fatigue, or mood changes such as anxiety or depression. Skin rashes and breast enlargement (gynecomastia) have been reported, especially with long-term use.

More serious side effects are linked to toxicity and include irregular heart rhythms, severe stomach problems, or mental disturbances like delirium or hallucinations. In clinical trials, about 2% of patients on Lanoxin were hospitalized for suspected toxicity, compared to less than 1% on placebo. Cardiac problems make up about half of all serious side effects, followed by gastrointestinal and central nervous system problems. If you notice symptoms like extreme fatigue, vision changes, or a slow or irregular heartbeat, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
