What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

PLAVIX (clopidogrel) is a medication prescribed for the prevention of cardiovascular events. PLAVIX indications include:

  • Reduce the rate of MI and stroke in conjunction with aspirin patients with non-ST elevated acute coronary syndromes
  • Reduce the rate of MI and stroke in patients with recent MI, stroke, or atherosclerotic disease
  • Reduce the rate of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in conjunction with aspirin in patients with acute ST-elevated MI (STEMI)

In patients with risk factors for cardiovascular events, slowing the aggregation of platelets can decrease the chances of embolic formation. PLAVIX (clopidogrel) works by inhibiting platelet activation and aggregation by irreversibly binding to P2Y12 ADP receptors of the surface of platelets.

Directions

Take PLAVIX exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The normal dose is 75 mg by mouth once daily.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in PLAVIX is clopidogrel.

Cautions

PLAVIX is a prodrug that must be converted to its active metabolite via CYP2C19 metabolism. Patients that are CYP2C19 poor metabolizers or those at risk of drug interactions that affect this pathway may experience decreased PLAVIX efficacy.

PLAVIX may increase the risk of bleeding and bleeding adverse events.

Stopping or interrupting PLAVIX may increase the risk of cardiovascular events.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TPP) is a rare, but serious condition that has been known to occur within the first two weeks of starting PLAVIX. Symptoms include purplish bruises of the skin and mucous membranes. Discontinue PLAVIX immediately and tell your doctor if you experience these symptoms.

Side Effects

Possible adverse effects of PLAVIX may include:

  • Acute liver failure
  • Agranulocytosis
  • Aplastic anemia/pancytopenia
  • Colitis
  • Confusion
  • Diarrhea
  • Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)
  • Fever
  • Hallucinations
  • Headache
  • Hemorrhage, fatal and non-fatal
  • Hypotension
  • Increased creatinine
  • Pancreatitis
  • Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP)
  • Vasculitis

This is not a complete list of adverse effects. Speak with your doctor prior to starting PLAVIX and if you have any adverse effects during treatment.
