Access to air is absolutely essential if you’re going to be enjoying the benefits of inhaling and exhaling all day long. Which of course, is what all of us do all day everyday, and the benefit being continuing to be alive. Most of us never think about our access to it in that way, but ask a person with asthma, and they’ll know all about severe breathing difficulties. Unfortunately, if you don’t know what it is like to have them, you’ve got it better for sure. Fortunately, there are asthma treatment medications that put the brakes on the inflammatory response constricting the airway. The Spiriva Respimat inhaler is one of them, but is Spiriva a steroid?

The active ingredient in Spiriva is Tiotropium Bromide, and it is not a corticosteroid medication like many other asthma relief drugs are. It is an anticholinergic, and that class of drugs inhibits the function of acetylcholine. So, after asking is Spiriva a steroid and learning it is not, the next question becomes how does acetylcholine function into an asthma attack? That’s not something the average person will know whether they have asthma or not? The airway into the lungs becomes constricted during an attack because of muscle contractions.

Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that causes muscles to contract, among several other ways it works in the body. Spiriva is a good asthma maintenance inhaler because of the Tiotropium Bromide contained in it. Maintenance inhalers are used on an ongoing basis by asthmatics because by taking doses regularly, those muscles around the entryways into the lungs are less likely to tighten up so much when the brain and immune system tell them to do so. But is Spiriva a steroid? No, it is not, while many asthma rescue inhalers like the Ventolin inhaler are corticosteroid medications.

The key to good results from asthma maintenance is always adhering to using the inhaler as often as you should. Your rescue inhaler is the one that will be used during an attack, but the Spiriva inhaler is one that you will use consistently.

There is no more need to talk about is Spiriva a steroid here, and we will look at what can be done to manage asthma outside of being faithful about using your maintenance inhaler. Spiriva steroid? Nope.

Slim Down Brown

There is a connection between asthma and having high blood pressure. Then from there, we can also know that quite often, when a person carries too much body weight, it can boost their blood pressure, among many other negative health effects of being overweight. Most asthmatics who aren’t very overweight won’t need to be taking hypertension (high blood pressure) medication. Still, it’s important to know, along with is Spiriva, a steroid that beta-blocker hypertension medications cannot be taken by people with asthma. Obesity and asthma are two subjects that are usually looked at on their own, but the connection between them is something not discussed when talking about asthma.

Something else that’s nearly never gets brought up when talking about that connection is obesity and bungee jumping. Can you go for those awesome-looking jumps if you’re obese? There are weight restrictions, but these days there are plus-sized travellers pushing for there to be more body-inclusive accommodations from the hospitality and travel industries, and the Big Girl Summer trend that started in 2021 has continued into this summer too. Snorkelling, Zip-lining, and bungee jumping are activities that larger people want more access to.

Breathe Easier / Stay Warm

Now that doesn’t have anything to do with asthma maintenance inhalers, is Spiriva a steroid. Again, it’s not, and it is an anticholinergic medication that is used to reduce the severity of asthma and make asthma attacks less frequent. Spiriva steroid? No such thing but these days, some people are wondering if a COVID infection can cause asthma, but the good news there is that is not the case. However, having asthma before you contract a coronavirus can mean that you may have a worse outcome. All the more reason for asthmatics to get vaccinated against COVID? Probably a fair thing to say.

One last mention here around is Spiriva a steroid, and who’s the fat bird in the kitchen? People who live in areas with dry cold winters may find their asthma is worse in the cold, and this is especially true if needing to work outdoors means you have prolonged exposure to the cold, dry air outside. This may mean that you need to use your Spiriva Respimat inhaler more often, but that is something your doctor can decide on if you’re not managing your asthma well with your current treatment regimen.
