What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) is a medication that can be used to treat multiple diseases, including malaria, Lupus Erythematosus, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. The exact way Plaquenil works is not well known. It is believed to disrupt the cell functions of the organisms that cause malaria. For immune diseases like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis, it acts by decreasing the body’s immune response.

Plaquenil comes as a 200mg tablet. Store Plaquenil at room temperature.

Directions

Take Plaquenil with a meal or a full glass of milk. The dose of Plaquenil depends on what it is used for:

  • Malaria: 800mg as a first dose. Then 400mg at 6hrs, 24hrs, and 48hrs after the first dose. Your doctor might use your weight to determine your weight to determine your dose.
  • Prevention of Malaria: Take 400mg once a week for two weeks before traveling to an area with malaria. Continue taking 400mg once per week while in the area with malaria, and for four weeks after leaving the area. Take the dose on the same day each week. Your doctor might use your weight to determine your dose.
  • Lupus: Take 200mg-400mg per day. You can take it as a single dose or divided into two dose.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Initially, take 400mg-600mg per day until you get a good response. You can take it as a single dose or divided into two doses. Once a good response occurs, your doctor might reduce your dose to 200mg-400mg per day
