What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Mucodyne (carbocisteine) is a medication that breaks up mucus in your airways. It works by reducing the stickiness of the mucus, which makes it easier to cough up. Directions

  • You can take Mucodyne with a meal or on an empty stomach.
  • You might forget to take your Mucodyne. If you do, then follow these guidelines:
    • Take your missed dose as soon as you remember, unless your next dose is scheduled in the next two hours.
    • You can skip the dose you forgot and continue with your next scheduled dose.
  • Do not take two doses at the same time.
  • Mucodyne is safe for adults and children. See below for the usual dosages:
    • For adults - Take two 375mg capsules three times per day. Your doctor might change your dose to one 375mg capsule taken four times per day when your symptoms improve.
    • For children:
      • 2-4 years old - Give 1.25mL-2.5mL of syrup four times per day
      • 5-11 years old - Give 5mL of syrup three times per day
      • 12-17 years old - Give 15mL of syrup three times per day

Cautions

  • Patients with a stomach ulcer should talk to their doctor before using Mucodyne.
  • Mucodyne should not be used by patients who are allergic to carbocisteine or any of the inactive ingredients in Mucodyne.
  • Patients who are pregnant or intend to become pregnant should discuss the risks of Mucodyne with their physician.
  • Stop taking Mucodyne immediately if you find blood in your vomit or stool. If you experience these symptoms, contact your physician.
  • Discuss any other medications you are currently using with your physician before starting Mucodyne.
