Atorvastatin is indicated for the treatment of high cholesterol levels and the usual dosage ranges from 10 mg daily to 80 mg daily. It works by competitively inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, which is an enzyme that converts cholesterol precursors to active cholesterol molecules. Inhibition of this key enzyme during cholesterol synthesis causes a net decrease in circulating cholesterol.
The combination is used to lower both blood pressure and cholesterol in those with coronary artery disease and similar conditions. Lowering blood pressure and cholesterol has been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events like stroke and heart attack.
Atorvastatin, one of the primary active ingredients in CADUET, is CONTRAINDICATED in people with active liver disease.
Those with known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to any of the active or inactive ingredients should not use CADUET.
Atorvastatin and similar medications may cause rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown) in rare cases. Those with a history of rhabdomyolysis should consider an alternative treatment. Atorvastatin has also been reported to cause immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) in rare cases. Anyone experiencing muscle aches and muscle weakness should speak with their physician. Other rare conditions that can arise from atorvastatin include endocrine dysfunction, CNS toxicity, and hemorrhagic stroke.
Amlodipine may worsen angina or acute myocardial infarction when starting or increasing the dose. Amlodipine may also cause hypotension, which is low blood pressure that causes symptoms like dizziness upon standing.
