What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.


Asacol HD (mesalamine) is a medicine used to treat ulcerative colitis in adults. It works by reducing inflammation caused by chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Asacol HD comes as an 800mg delayed-release tablet. Store Asacol HD at room temperature. 


The usual dose is two 800mg tablets taken three times a day. Asacol HD can be taken on an empty stomach or with food. The tablets should not be cut or crushed. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water.

  • Asacol HD should not be used for more than six weeks at a time.
  • Patients who have a known allergy to salicylates or any of the ingredients found in Asacol HD tablets should not take this medicine.
  • Patients who have kidney or liver disease should discuss the risks of using Asacol HD with their physician before starting treatment.
  • Asacol HD may interact with other medications. Patients should discuss their medications with their doctor.
  • Patients who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or intend to become pregnant should discuss the risks of using Asacol HD with their physician.
  • Some patients who start Asacol HD may experience worsening of symptoms. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms after starting Asacol HD: cramping, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, or fever. These symptoms usually go away after treatment is stopped.

  • Worsening of ulcerative colitis
