What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Zyflo CR (zileuton) is a medication used to prevent and treat asthma in adults and children who are 12 years old or older.

Zyflo CR is not indicated for the treatment of a sudden asthma attack.

Directions

The instructions that are supplied with your Zyflo CR prescription should be followed. Refer any questions or concerns to your doctor or pharmacist.

Zyflo CR comes in a 600 mg extended-release tablet. 

The recommended dose is two tablets by mouth two times a day, within one hour after breakfast and dinner. 

Ingredients

Zileuton is the active ingredient contained in Zyflo CR tablets. Crospovidone, ferric oxide, glyceryl behenate, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, pregelatinized starch, propylene glycol, sodium starch glycolate, and talc are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Patients with liver disease or liver function enzymes that are consistently 3 times or more than the upper normal limit should avoid taking Zyflo CR.

Patients with an allergy or sensitivity to zileuton or any of the other ingredients in Zyflo CR should avoid taking Zyflo CR.

Cautions

  • Before taking Zyflo CR, patients should tell their doctor about their allergies and medical conditions, in addition to all the medications they take and their pregnancy or breastfeeding status. 
  • Liver function enzymes and bilirubin may increase with the use of Zyflo CR. Patients should use caution if they drink alcohol and/or have or have had liver disease.
  • Sleep problems and behavior changes can be caused by Zyflo CR. Patients should be on the lookout for these effects.

Side Effects

Sinusitis, nausea, and pharyngolaryngeal pain are the most common side effects that occur with Zyflo CR. Zyflo CR can cause other side effects as well, so patients should call their doctor if they experience side effects that bother them or won't go away.
