What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

To apply the ointment, you should first wash your hands thoroughly and ensure the area around your eye is clean. Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket, and squeeze a ribbon of ointment into the space between the lower lid and the eyeball. Close your eyes for 1 to 2 minutes to help the ointment spread evenly, and then gently wipe any excess ointment away with a clean tissue. Be sure to also wipe the tip of the ointment tube and close it tightly.

The standard dosage may vary depending on the severity of the infection and your doctor's recommendation. Follow the prescribed dosage and continue using the ointment for the entire duration recommended by your doctor.

Ingredients

Zovirax Eye Ointment contains the active ingredient acyclovir, which belongs to a group of medicines called antivirals.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Refrain from using this medication if you have known allergies to acyclovir, valacyclovir, or any component contained in the ointment.
  • Inspect the packaging carefully before use; if it looks tampered with or damaged, do not use the product.
  • Use of the Zovirax eye ointment past its listed expiration date is not recommended since its efficacy beyond that time cannot be assured.
  • After initially opening the Zovirax eye ointment, it should not be used for more than 28 days. Continuing to use it past this time frame might reduce its sterility and effectiveness.

If you have any concerns regarding whether using the Zovirax eye ointment is appropriate, seek professional guidance from a healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Cautions

  • Before you start using Zovirax Eye Ointment, inform your doctor about the following:
    • Your complete medical history, including any eye problems
    • All medications you currently take, including over-the-counter and prescription drugs
    • Your pregnancy status, including whether you are pregnant, considering becoming pregnant, or are currently breastfeeding
    • Any specific allergies or intolerances you may have to the ointment's ingredients
  • In the event that your symptoms worsen instead of getting better, seek immediate assistance from a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or pharmacist.
  • It's important not to share the Zovirax eye ointment with others, even if their symptoms mirror yours, to prevent cross-contamination.
  • After application, you may notice a brief blurring of your vision lasting anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision clears.
  • Ensure that the ointment is stored in a cool, dry place, with temperatures maintained below 25°C.
  • Keep the Zovirax eye ointment out of reach of small children, choosing a storage area that is both secure and inaccessible to them.
  • Avoid storing Zovirax eye ointment or other medications in locations prone to heat and moisture, such as bathrooms, near sinks, inside vehicles, or on window sills, as these conditions can impact the effectiveness of the medication.

Side Effects

Some common side effects of acyclovir ophthalmic include eye pain, inflammation of the cornea, and irritation. These side effects are usually mild and temporary, but it's important to be aware of them and monitor for any changes in symptoms.

In rare cases, patients may experience more serious side effects, such as severe eyelid inflammation and allergic reactions. Although these side effects are uncommon, you should contact a healthcare professional immediately if you experience persistent or worsening symptoms.
