What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Zomig (zolmitriptan) is used to treat adults who suffer from migraines with or without aura.

Zomig should not be taken until a migraine diagnosis has been made. 

Zomig should not be taken to prevent migraines.

Zomig should not be taken to treat cluster headaches.

Directions

Follow the instructions on the label of your Zomig prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any concerns or questions that arise.

Zomig is available in 2.5 mg scored tablets, 5 mg unscored tablets, 2.5 mg orally disintegrating tablets, and 5 mg orally disintegrating tablets.

The recommended initial dose is to take 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg by mouth. Do not take more than 5 mg in a single dose.

You may take another dose after 2 hours if you need to. Do not take more than 10 mg per 24 hours.

Your dose may be adjusted if you have moderate or severe liver problems.

The orally disintegrating tablets should be placed on the tongue to dissolve. Do not break them.

Ingredients

Zolmitriptan, a serotonin receptor agonist, is the active ingredient in Zomig.

The inactive ingredients contained in Zomig tablets include anhydrous lactose NF, microcrystalline cellulose NF, sodium starch glycolate NF, magnesium stearate NF, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose USP, titanium dioxide USP, polyethylene glycol 400 NF, yellow iron oxide NF (2.5 mg tablet), red iron oxide NF (5 mg tablet), and polyethylene glycol 8000 NF.

The inactive ingredients contained in Zomig orally disintegrating tablets include mannitol USP, microcrystalline cellulose NF, crospovidone NF, aspartame NF, sodium bicarbonate USP, citric acid anhydrous USP, colloidal silicon dioxide NF, magnesium stearate NF, and orange flavor SN 027512.

Contraindications

Do not take Zomig if you have ever had coronary artery disease or coronary vasospasm.

Do not take Zomig if you have Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or other issues with cardiac accessory conduction.

Do not take Zomig if you have ever had a stroke, a mini stroke, or hemiplegic or basilar migraine.

Do not take Zomig if you have peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, or uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Do not take Zomig if you have taken another serotonin receptor agonist or an ergotamine-containing medication within 24 hours. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether or not you are taking these medications.

Do not take Zomig if you have taken a monoamine-oxidase (MAO)-A inhibitor in the last 14 days. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether or not you are taking an MAO-A inhibitor. 

Do not take Zomig if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or excipients contained in the medication.

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Zomig, tell your doctor about:
    • Any allergies you may have
    • Any medications you may take 
    • Your health problems or conditions
    • Your breastfeeding and/or pregnancy status
  • The use of Zomig may cause serious adverse cardiac effects, such as a heart attack.
  • Coronary artery vasospasm and other vasospastic reactions may be caused by Zomig.
  • Zomig may cause life-threatening heart arrhythmias. 
  • Feelings of tightness, pain, and pressure in the chest area, throat, neck, and jaw may occur with the use of Zomig.
  • Zomig may cause fatal cerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and stroke.
  • Overuse of Zomig may worsen headache symptoms.
  • Serotonin syndrome may occur with Zomig.
  • Zomig may cause high blood pressure.
  • Zomig-ZMT orally disintegrating tablets have phenylalanine that can harm patients who have phenylketonuria. 

Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with Zomig include neck, throat, and jaw pain or pressure, dizziness, a tingling sensation of the skin, weakness, fatigue, warm/cold sensation, nausea, heaviness sensation, and dry mouth.
