What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Zoladex is an implant that is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Endometriosis
  • Breast cancer in women who have not gone through menopause or are around the time of menopause

Also, Zoladex can be used to thin the endometrial lining prior to endometrial ablation.

Zoladex comes as an subcutaneous injectable implant of 3.6 mg or 10.8 mg.

Zoladex is a gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist.

Directions

Administer Zoladex as your doctor has directed. If you have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Information regarding the duration of treatment will be provided to you by your doctor. Usually, patients are administered a subcutaneous injection every 28 days.

Ingredients

3.6 mg or 10.8 mg goserelin implant is contained in Zoladex injection.

Contraindications

If you have an allergy to the medication, do not use Zoladex.

Unless you are using Zoladex to treat advanced breast cancer, you should not use Zoladex if you are pregnant.

Cautions

  • Before you start using Zoladex, tell your doctor:
    • About all prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • About your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Tumor symptoms may become worse in the first few weeks of receiving injections and may include blockages in the ureters and spinal cord compression.
  • GnRH analogs can cause high blood sugar and an increased risk for diabetes in men. Monitor blood sugar levels.
  • Monitoring for heart attacks, sudden cardiac death, and stroke should take place, as these have been reported in men who used GnRH analogs.
  • High calcium levels in the blood may occur in patients with bone cancer who are on Zoladex.
  • Some patients who receive Zoladex may experience hypersensitivity reactions.
  • Zoladex can cause QT prolongation, a heart rhythm problem.
  • Reactions at the injection site may occur with Zoladex administration.
  • Women who receive GnRH agonists may develop depression or their depression may worsen.
  • Zoladex treatment can cause cervical resistance.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, Zoladex side effects include the following: hot flashes, headache, sweating, acne, mood changes, depression, decreased sex drive, vaginal inflammation, breast shrinkage, skin conditions, and swelling. Immediately talk to your doctor if you develop concerning or persistent side effects.
