What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Zilxi is a topical medication; it is used to treat rosacea in adults. Zilxi belongs to a class of medications called the tetracyclines.

Zilxi is a prescription medication only. It comes in a topical foam, 1.5%, that is to be used only on the skin.

Directions

Zilxi should be used as your doctor has advised. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Gently rub Zilxi one time a day on the skin on the face.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Zilxi foam is minocycline. The inactive ingredients include the following: soybean oil, coconut oil, light mineral oil, cyclomethicone, cetostearyl alcohol, stearic acid, myristyl alcohol, hydrogenated castor oil, beeswax, stearyl alcohol, and docosanol. The container is made of aluminum.

Contraindications

Avoid using Zilxi if you have an allergy to any medications in the tetracycline class or to any of the ingredients contained in Zilxi.

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Zilxi, tell your doctor:
    • Any and all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, including other topical medications
    • About any allergies you may have
    • About your past medical history and current health conditions
    • If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Zilxi contains a flammable propellant, so avoid smoking or being around open fire or flames during and after applying Zilxi.
  • Permanent discoloration of the teeth and a stop in bone growth can occur if using oral tetracyclines during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, infancy, or childhood up to 8 years of age.
  • Clostridioides difficile, an infection that causes severe diarrhea, can occur with Zilxi treatment.
  • If liver damage is suspected, stop using Zilxi.
  • In cases of kidney problems, oral minocycline doses should be adjusted.
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness can be caused by oral minocycline.
  • Increased pressure in the brain can be caused by oral minocyclines.
  • Autoimmune problems can be caused by oral minocyclines.
  • Minimize exposure to the sun or artificial sunlight, as photosensitivity can occur.
  • Serious skin reactions can result from oral minocycline and should be discontinued if these effects occur.

Side Effects

The most common side effect associated with Zilxi is diarrhea. If you develop concerning or persistent side effects, immediately speak with your doctor.
