What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Zebeta (bisoprolol fumarate), a beta1-selective adrenoceptor blocker, is used to treat high blood pressure. 

Directions

Follow the instructions that are on the label of your prescription. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have about the medication.

The starting dose is usually 5 mg by mouth once daily. The dose may be adjusted based on medication response, kidney function, liver function, and other medical conditions. 

Ingredients

Bisoprolol fumarate is the active ingredient contained in each Zebeta tablet. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, crospovidone, dibasic calcium phosphate, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, polysorbate 80, and titanium dioxide. Red and yellow iron oxide are additional ingredients in the 5 mg tablets.

Contraindications

Zebeta should not be taken in patients with cardiogenic shock, overt heart failure, second or third degree AV block, and marked sinus bradycardia. 

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Zebeta, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • Your allergies
    • Your medications
    • Your health problems
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Zebeta should be used with caution in patients who have heart failure.
  • Zebeta should not be stopped abruptly. It should be tapered.
  • Zebeta can cause or worsen the symptoms of arterial insufficiency in patients who have peripheral vascular disease.
  • Zebeta is not recommended in patients with bronchospastic disease.
  • Caution with Zebeta should be used before undergoing anesthesia and major surgical procedures.
  • Zebeta can mask the symptoms of low blood sugar, including rapid heart rate.
  • Zebeta can mask the signs of hyperthyroidism, including rapid heart rate. 
  • Drug interactions may occur if Zebeta is taken with certain medications. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about all the medications you take, including prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements. 

Side Effects

Contact your doctor right away if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects. Zebeta can cause increased sweating, joint stiffness, dizziness, headache, loss of sensation, dry mouth, slow heart rate, vivid dreams, trouble sleeping, depression, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, bronchospasm, cough, shortness of breath, pharyngitis, rhinitis, sinusitis, upper respiratory infection, weakness, chest pain, fatigue, and peripheral edema.
