What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Zavesca (Miglustat) is a medicine in pill form that helps treat type 1 Gaucher disease and Pompe disease, which are rare genetic disorders. It works by blocking an enzyme that creates certain fatty substances in the body, which can build up and cause problems. By reducing these substances, Zavesca helps manage the symptoms of these diseases and improve patients' quality of life. This medication should be taken under the guidance of a doctor.

Directions

Take Zavesca as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The standard dosage for adults is to take one 100-mg capsule three times a day. Take the medication at regular intervals each day to maintain even levels of the drug in your body. If you experience side effects such as tremors or diarrhea, your healthcare provider may reduce the dosage to 100 mg once or twice daily. It's important to adhere to the schedule and not to skip doses.

If a dose is missed, skip that dose and continue with your next scheduled dosage. Don't double up to catch up. Always take Zavesca at the same time each day. Follow all instructions provided by your doctor to ensure the medication works effectively.

Ingredients

Miglustat is the active ingredient in Zavesca.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Severe kidney problems
  • Pregnancy or plans to conceive
  • Under 18 years old

Cautions

  • Before initiating treatment with Zavesca, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Watch for symptoms like pain, weakness, numbness, and tingling in your limbs. These could be signs of nerve damage. If you experience these symptoms, the benefits and risks of continuing Zavesca should be evaluated, and stopping the treatment might be necessary.
  • You might notice trembling in your hands, especially during the first month of treatment. This usually settles down within 1 to 3 months. If the tremor doesn't go away or is severe, your doctor might lower your dose or stop the medication.
  • Many people experience diarrhea and weight loss when taking Zavesca, which could be due to its effects on how your body handles certain sugars. Managing your diet and possibly using medications can help control these symptoms. If diarrhea and weight issues persist despite these measures, it's important to check for other underlying conditions.
  • Since Zavesca can lower your platelet count, regular blood tests to check these levels are recommended, especially if you have Gaucher disease. Low platelets can affect how your blood clots, but this side effect doesn’t typically come with bleeding issues.

Side Effects

Zavesca may cause side effects. Common side effects include stomach pain, gas, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and weight loss. Individuals might also experience dry mouth, muscle cramps, dizziness, and changes in menstrual cycles, among others. Most of these effects are manageable but can be uncomfortable.

Zavesca can also lead to serious side effects such as peripheral neuropathy, which includes numbness or burning sensations in the hands and feet. Immediate medical attention is advised if you experience these symptoms. Additionally, the medication can cause new or worsening hand tremors and severe diarrhea, which may require adjustments in treatment or diet. If you notice any new or more severe symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away.
