What is a Generic Drug?

Directions

Zaroxolyn should be taken as directed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns that arise may be answered by your doctor or pharmacist.

Zaroxolyn Dose

High blood pressure: Take 2.5 mg to 5 mg by mouth one time a day, up to 20 mg daily.

Fluid retention: Take 2.5 mg to 10 mg by mouth one time a day, up to 20 mg daily.

A lower dose may be required in older patients.

Ingredients

Metolazone is the active ingredient contained in Zaroxolyn.

Contraindications

Do not take Zaroxolyn if you are:

  • Allergic to metolazone or sulfonamides
  • Unable to produce urine

Zaroxolyn should not be given to patients in a hepatic coma or precoma.

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Zaroxolyn, tell your doctor:
    • About all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
    • About any allergies you have
    • About your current health conditions and past medical history
    • If you are pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding
    • If you have any upcoming surgeries or procedures
  • Caution should be exercised in patients with diabetes, high cholesterol, high levels of uric acid or gout, low blood pressure, lupus, or liver disease. Caution should also be exercised in patients who have had a sympathectomy.
  • Worsening digitalis toxicity may occur with Zaroxolyn use.
  • Photosensitivity may occur with Zaroxolyn use.
  • Zaroxolyn may cause high calcium, low potassium, low sodium, and low magnesium levels.
  • Zaroxolyn may cause angioedema (swelling underneath the skin) or other allergic reactions.
  • Allergic reactions due to cross-sensitivity may present in patients with a sulfa allergy; however, the risk is low or may not even occur.
  • Lipid and glucose metabolism can be affected by Zaroxolyn.
  • Zaroxolyn may cause sexual dysfunction in males.
  • Patients should monitor their blood pressure regularly, especially if they are also being treated with other blood pressure medications.
  • Zaroxolyn use for high blood pressure should be avoided in patients with primary adrenal insufficiency. A different blood pressure medication or an adjustment of glucocorticoid/mineralocorticoid therapy is recommended in these patients.

Side Effects

Chest pain, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, electrolyte imbalances, glucose in the urine, gout attacks, headache, liver problems, high uric acid levels, joint pain, nerve pain, low blood pressure, pancreatitis, serious skin problems, fainting, and volume depletion are some Zaroxolyn side effects; however, these are not the only side effects that may occur. Contact your doctor if you experience side effects that bother you or won't go away.
