What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Xigduo is a medication prescribed to treat adults with type 2 diabetes; it is used in combination with diet and exercise. Dapagliflozin and metformin are the two medications that are contained in Xigduo.

Xigduo comes in the following strengths of oral tablets:

  • 5 mg dapagliflozin/850 mg metformin
  • 5 mg dapagliflozin/1,000 mg metformin

Directions

Xiduo should be taken as your doctor has directed. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

It is recommended to take one tablet orally twice daily; it should not be taken on an empty stomach.

Ingredients

Dapagliflozin and metformin are the active ingredients in Xigduo.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Xigduo if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Acute metabolic acidosis (increased acid levels in the blood)
  • Diabetic precoma
  • Liver impairment
  • Kidney impairment, dehydration, severe infection, or shock
  • Low oxygen levels, heart failure, lung failure, or you had a recent heart attack
  • Alcohol intoxication or you drink increased amounts of alcohol

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Xigduo, tell your doctor about:
    • Any and all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take
    • Any allergies you have
    • Your past medical history and current health conditions
    • If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding

Side Effects

If Xigduo is taken with insulin or another antidiabetic medication, there is an increased chance of experiencing low blood sugar. Gastrointestinal problems are another possible Xigduo side effect. These are not the only side effects that can occur. If you experience concerning or persisting side effect, immediately talk to your doctor.
