Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Xalacom is an ophthalmic solution that combines two active ingredients: Latanoprost and Timolol Maleate. Latanoprost belongs to a class of medications known as prostaglandin analogs, while Timolol Maleate is a beta-blocker. Together, they work by reducing the pressure inside the eye, addressing conditions such as open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Patients might use Xalacom eye drops when other treatments, like topical beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogs alone, have not been sufficient.
The standard Xalacom dosage is one drop into the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. Before using Xalacom, users should remove contact lenses and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them to avoid potential absorption by soft lenses due to benzalkonium chloride in the solution.
Proper application involves tilting the head back, pulling down the eyelid to create a small pocket, and releasing a drop into it without the dropper touching the eye or surrounding areas to prevent contamination. After applying the drop, close the eye for 1 to 2 minutes to allow for absorption. Avoid blinking or rubbing the eye immediately after application. If using another topical eye medication, wait at least 5 minutes before applying it.
Latanoprost and Timolol Maleate are the active ingredients in Xalacom.
Avoid using Xalacom if any of the following apply:
Xalacom may cause a noticeable change in eye color over time, particularly increasing the brown pigment in the iris, especially in individuals with multi-colored eyes. This change is gradual and permanent. Users might also experience eye irritation, including burning, itching, and the feeling of something in the eye. These reactions are generally mild and do not require discontinuation of treatment.
Xalacom can significantly affect heart function. Users should immediately consult their doctor if they notice any heart-related changes such as irregular heartbeat or chest pain. The medication can also trigger serious allergic reactions characterized by swelling, breathing difficulties, and severe rashes, necessitating urgent medical attention. Long-term use might lead to complications like vision changes or sensitivity to light, which should be monitored closely by a healthcare provider.
