Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Wound-Gard is a veterinary antiseptic spray for dogs and cats that helps protect and heal wounds while discouraging pets from licking or chewing them. It contains chlorhexidine gluconate to fight bacteria and fungi, along with denatonium benzoate, a bitter agent that makes the area less appealing to lick. Veterinarians recommend it for use on cuts, surgical sites, eczema, and other skin problems.
Shake the bottle well before each use, then apply it directly to the affected area about three times per day. As a guide, use 3–4 pumps for every 2 cm of wound length, making sure the spray covers the entire surface without soaking it.
The formula dries quickly, so bandaging is usually not needed. How often it should be applied may vary depending on the wound and your veterinarian’s advice.
This product contains chlorhexidine gluconate, menthol, denatonium benzoate, phenoxyethanol, and eucalyptus oil.
Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:
Wound-Gard usually causes very few side effects in dogs and cats. In clinical studies, no cases of obvious irritation or allergic reactions were reported. Some pets may have mild skin irritation or sensitivity where the spray is applied. A few owners noticed their pets licking or biting at the treated area, but this was usually minor and didn’t cause wounds to reopen or stitches to come out.
Serious reactions to Wound-Gard are uncommon. Because it contains chlorhexidine, some sensitive pets may develop allergies. If a pet shows severe skin problems, ongoing irritation, or worsening of the wound after treatment, a veterinarian should be consulted right away. When used as directed, the spray doesn’t interfere with healing, but pets should always be watched for unusual reactions or slower recovery.
