Directions

Wegovy is a subcutaneous injection available in a pre-filled pen. Each pen delivers a one-time dose of either 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, or 2.4 mg.

Inject Wegovy into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once a week, on the same day each week, with or without food. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have about using Wegovy. 

The usual starting dose is 0.25 mg once a week for 4 weeks. Your dose may increase every 4 weeks until you achieve 2.4 mg once a week.

The maintenance dose is 2.4 mg once a week.

If you have type 2 diabetes, monitor your blood sugar before starting and during treatment with Wegovy.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide.

Contraindications

Avoid using Wegovy if you or a member of your family have had thyroid carcinoma (MTC), a type of thyroid cancer, or if you have Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). 

Avoid using Wegovy if you are allergic to semaglutide or any of the other ingredients contained in Wegovy.

  • In rodents, semaglutide causes thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures. It is unknown whether WEGOVYTM causes thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans as the human relevance of semaglutide-induced rodent thyroid C-cell tumors has not been determined.
  • WEGOVYTM is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Counsel patients regarding the potential risk of MTC and symptoms of thyroid tumors.
  • Prior to starting Wegovy, talk to your doctor:
    • About all the medications you take. These include prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Avoid using Wegovy with other GLP-1 agonists.
    • About any allergies you may have
    • About your medical conditions such as:
      • Kidney problems
      • Pancreatic problems
      • Type 2 diabetes
      • History of diabetic retinopathy
      • Currently have or have a history of mental health problems
    • About your pregnancy plans. Tell your doctor if you are currently pregnant.
    • About your breastfeeding plans. Tell your doctor if you are currently breastfeeding.
  • Store Wegovy in the refrigerator. Do not freeze Wegovy. After using your Wegovy pen, discard it.

Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with Wegovy are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, headache, tiredness, dizziness, indigestion, bloating, belching, flatulence, stomach flu, and heartburn.

These are not all of the possible side effects that can be caused by Wegovy. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop worrisome or continuous side effects.
