What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Voltaren Rapid if any of the following apply:

  • History of allergic reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Voltaren Rapid, inform your doctor about the following:
    • Any medications you take, especially blood thinners, heart and blood pressure medicines, or other NSAIDs.
    • Any medical conditions you have, particularly liver, kidney, or stomach problems.
    • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as this medication may not be suitable.
  • Be aware of the potential increased risk of heart attack and stroke with long-term use or high doses. Use the appropriate dosage according to your healthcare provider’s instructions.
  • Monitor for signs of bleeding, ulcers, or perforations in the digestive tract. If you experience persistent stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black, tarry stools, contact your healthcare provider immediately, as these could be signs of serious complications.
  • Watch for symptoms of liver problems, such as jaundice or dark urine. Report any unusual fatigue, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain to your healthcare provider promptly, as they may indicate a liver issue that requires medical attention.
  • Regularly check your blood pressure, as Diclofenac may cause high blood pressure. If you notice consistently elevated readings or other signs of hypertension, discuss them with your healthcare provider, as adjustments to your medication or lifestyle may be necessary.
  • Seek medical help if you notice serious skin reactions, like blisters or rashes. Early intervention is crucial, as these symptoms could progress to more severe skin disorders, such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis.
  • If you have asthma, be mindful that Diclofenac might aggravate your symptoms. Monitor your breathing carefully and keep your asthma medications handy; if you notice any worsening of your asthma symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away.

Side Effects

While it is generally effective in providing relief, there are certain side effects users should be aware of. Some common side effects include nausea, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, and constipation. Other possible side effects are stomach pain, gas, and dizziness.

In addition to these common side effects, more serious risks are associated with taking Voltaren Rapid. Users should be aware that NSAIDs may increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal adverse events such as bleeding and ulceration, as well as cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.

Monitor all side effects and consult a doctor immediately if they become severe or persistent.
