Voltaren Ophthalmic (diclofenac sodium ophthalmic solution) 0.1% is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory eye drop that is prescribed to help treat postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery and to relieve pain and light sensitivity in patients having corneal refractive surgery.

Directions

Voltaren Ophthalmic should be used as your doctor has prescribed. You may speak to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Treatment after cataract surgery:

Instill one drop into the affected eye(s) four times daily, starting 24 hours post-surgery. Continue use for two weeks.

Treatment for corneal refractive surgery:

Instill one to two drops into the eye being operated on one hour prior to corneal refractive surgery. One to two drops should be instilled within 15 minutes post-surgery, then four times daily for up to three days.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Voltaren Ophthalmic is diclofenac sodium 0.1%. Inactive ingredients include the following: polyoxyl 35 castor oil, Boric acid, tromethamine, sorbic acid (2 mg/mL), edetate disodium (1 mg/mL), and purified water.

Contraindications

If you have an allergy to any of the ingredients contained in Voltaren Ophthalmic, avoid use.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Voltaren Ophthalmic, tell your doctor:
    • About other eye drops and ointments you use, and all other medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • About your current health problems and past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Voltaren Ophthalmic may slow or prolong healing.
  • Voltaren Ophthalmic can cause keratitis.
  • Patients who have complicated eye surgeries, corneal denervation, corneal epithelial defects, diabetes, ocular surface disease (e.g., dry eye syndrome), rheumatoid arthritis, or repeat eye surgeries within a short duration may have an increased risk of corneal adverse events; therefore, use caution while using Voltaren Ophthalmic.
  • Risk for corneal adverse events may be increased if topical NSAIDs are used for more than 24 hours pre surgery or more than two weeks post surgery.
  • Use caution while using Voltaren Ophthalmic if you have bleeding problems or use other medications that can affect bleeding time.

Side Effects

Voltaren Ophthalmic may cause burning and stinging. Other side effects may present. If you experience side effects that concern you or won’t go away, immediately talk to your doctor.
