Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Vetoryl is a prescription medicine for dogs used to treat Cushing’s disease, a condition caused by excessive cortisol in the body. Its active ingredient, trilostane, lowers cortisol levels by blocking an enzyme in the adrenal glands. It is given as an oral capsule that’s prescribed and monitored by a veterinarian.
This medication is given to dogs based on their weight, with a starting dose of 1–3 mg per pound of body weight once daily. Veterinarians typically begin with the lowest effective dose and adjust as needed. Most dogs receive their full dose once a day with food, but if symptoms return before the next dose, the daily amount may be divided into two smaller doses given 12 hours apart. In these cases, the larger portion is usually given in the morning. Capsules must be swallowed whole and should never be broken or emptied.
Trilostane is the active ingredient in this drug.
Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:
The most common side effects of Vetoryl in dogs include reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and lethargy. Some dogs may also develop urinary tract infections, joint or muscle issues, skin problems, or changes in behavior such as shaking or trembling. These reactions may be temporary, but owners should watch their pets closely when starting treatment.
More serious side effects can occur, including adrenal gland damage, hypoadrenocorticism (very low cortisol), hemorrhagic diarrhea, collapse, or sudden death. Serious problems are more likely if a dog develops adrenal crisis or adrenal rupture, but even these can sometimes improve if treatment is stopped and managed promptly. Owners should contact their veterinarian immediately if their dog shows severe weakness, collapse, or ongoing digestive problems.
