What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Velphoro is a medication that counters the calcium depleting effects of elevated phosphate in the blood, which is the cause of hypocalcemia and chronic kidney disease. It is a chewable kidney dialysis medication that you can eat either with meals or snacks and is typically taken as 1-chewable with each meal, although your physician may adjust that dose.

Velphoro is given to people who are receiving kidney dialysis and gets best results when patients also cut back on phosphorous-rich foods. Dietary changes can add to the effectiveness of chronic kidney disease treatment, and the baseline for effective treatment is to have a serum phosphorous level of 5.5 mg/dL.

Directions

Take one Velphoro chewable tablet before, during, or after eating a snack or meal. The tablet must be crushed or chewed before eating it, and it is important to not swallow the tablet whole without with crushing it up first or chewing it well and then swallowing it.

If you forget to take Velphoro before, during, or after a meal then you do not need to take a make-up dose, you can just take your crushed or chewed tablet again at your next snack or meal. Taking Velphoro without food or snack will render the medication ineffective. Always take with food.

Many people find it helpful to set a reminder on their smartphone just before the 3 different times of a day they will usually be sitting down to eat.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Velphoro is succoferric oxyhydroxide.
