What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Urocrit K is prescribed for the treatment of conditions that increase the risk of kidney stone formation, including

  • Hypocitraturic calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis of any etiology
  • Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) with calcium stones
  • Uric acid lithiasis with or without calcium stones

Kidney stones are an often painful condition that ranges from mild to severe based on the size of the stones. They can cause pain, blood in the urine, and an increased risk of infection.

Urocrit K works through several mechanisms. It makes the blood and urine less acidic, raising the pH and preventing stones from forming. Kidney stones are calcium oxalate. Urocrit K prevents calcium from binding to oxalate, and it binds to citrate instead, which can be safely urinated out.

Directions

The dose of Urocrit depends on how much citrate is in your urine. Your doctor will give you a lab test to determine the correct dosage. The dose usually ranges from 30-60 mEq per day and can be divided and taken with meals.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Urocrit K is potassium citrate.
