What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Directions

Trulance tablets are available in a 3-mg strength and should be swallowed whole. Talk to your doctor or your pharmacist if you are unable to swallow the tablets whole or if you have a feeding tube.

Recommended dosing in adults:

CIC: 3 mg by mouth once a day

IBS-C: 3 mg by mouth once a day

Trulance can be taken with or without food.

Ingredients

Plecanatide is the active ingredient in Trulance. 

Contraindications

Children who are younger than 6 years old should not take Trulance due to the risk of severe dehydration.

You should not take Trulance if you have or suspect that you have a mechanical gastrointestinal obstruction.

Cautions

  • TRULANCE is contraindicated in patients less than 6 years of age; in young juvenile mice, plecanatide caused death due to dehydration. 
  • Avoid use of TRULANCE in patients 6 years to less than 18 years of age. 
  • The safety and effectiveness of TRULANCE have not been established in patients less than 18 years of age. 
  • Before you start treatment with Trulance, you should discuss the following with your doctor:
    • Your medical history and medical conditions
    • Your allergies
    • All the medications you take, including prescription, nonprescription, vitamins, and herbal supplements
    • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
    • If you are nursing or plan to nurse your baby
  • Trulance may cause harm to patients less than 18 years old and should be avoided in these patients.

Side Effects

Diarrhea is the most common side effect of Trulance. You may notice diarrhea within the first month of taking Trulance. If your diarrhea becomes severe, stop taking Trulance and tell your doctor right away.

Trulance may cause other side effects. Tell your doctor right away if you experience side effects that are troublesome or persistent.
