What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Tradjenta comes in 5 mg tablets. Once you are prescribed and buy Tradjenta 5mg, then the recommended dose of Tradjenta is 5 mg by mouth once daily. Tradjenta medication may be taken with or without food.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Tradjenta tablets is Linagliptin.

Contraindications

Discuss your allergies with your doctor. Do not take Tradjenta if you have hypersensitivity to Linagliptin or any of the ingredients in Tradjenta. Allergic reactions may be severe and life-threatening. 

Cautions

  • Tradjenta can interact with certain medications. Before you start taking Tradjenta, tell your doctor about all medications you take, including vitamins and herbal supplements.
  • Pancreatitis has been reported with the use of Tradjenta medication. Stop taking Tradjenta and seek medical care if you believe you have pancreatitis.
  • Heart failure may occur with the use of DPP-4 inhibitors. The benefits and risks should be considered, especially if you are at an increased risk for heart failure.
  • Your risk of getting low blood sugar is increased with the use of Tradjenta and other medications that can lower your blood sugar. Watch for signs and symptoms of low blood sugar, including sweating, hunger, irritability, nervousness, jittery, confusion, and/or fast heart beat. If you have low blood sugar, treat it as your doctor has instructed.
  • Joint pain is possible with the use of DPP-4 inhibitors such as Tradjenta. Contact your doctor if you develop joint pain.
  • Some people may develop a skin reaction called bullous pemphigoid while taking DPP-4 inhibitors such as Tradjenta. If you develop blisters, immediately contact your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant, think you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant, let your doctor know.
  • If you are breastfeeding or plan to start breastfeeding, let your doctor know.

Side Effects

Be sure you tell your doctor if you experience side effects that persist or are bothersome. The most common Tradjenta (linagliptin) side effects include:

  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Stuffy or runny nose 
  • Sore throat
