Normally, muscarinic receptors are involved in the contraction of the smooth muscle that causes urination. By blocking these receptors, Toviaz relaxes the muscles of the bladder to reduce symptoms of overactive bladder.
The starting dose of Toviaz is 4 mg taken by mouth once daily. The dose can be increased to 8 mg taken by mouth once daily based on efficacy and side effects.
Those with kidney impairment or taking certain medications should not take more than 4 mg once daily. Follow the instructions from your doctor and keep them informed of any new medications or medical conditions.
Toviaz should not be split, crushed, or chewed.
The active ingredient in Toviaz extended-release tablets is fesoterodine fumarate.

Toviaz is contraindicated in people who have gastric retention, urinary retention, or uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma.
Some people have reported swelling of the face, tongue, and throat while taking Toviaz. If you experience swelling of the facial area, stop Toviaz and speak with your doctor. Swelling of the upper area may be life-threatening.
Toviaz can cause symptoms of drowsiness, dizziness, and increased fatigue. Use caution while driving or operating machinery. Toviaz should be used with caution in older patients or those with increased fall risk.
