What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

TOBI Podhaler is used for managing cystic fibrosis patients infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a type of bacteria.

TOBI Podhaler is supplied in 28 mg capsules that contain an inhalation powder. Do not swallow the capsules–use them only with TOBI Podhaler.

Directions

TOBI Podhaler should be used as directed by your doctor. Read the information leaflet that is supplied with your prescription. You should be taught how to properly use TOBI Podhaler by your healthcare provider. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any questions or concerns you may have.

Recommended dosage: the inhalation of four capsules (112 mg) twice daily for 28 days.

Store the TOBI Podhaler capsules and Podhaler device in a dry place at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep away from children.

Ingredients

The aminoglycoside tobramycin is the active ingredient in TOBI Podhaler capsules. 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC), calcium chloride, and sulfuric acid (for pH adjustment) are the other ingredients.

Contraindications

Patients who are allergic to any aminoglycoside should avoid using TOBI Podhaler. If you do not know whether you are allergic to these types of medications, talk to your doctor.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with TOBI Podhaler, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Patients with auditory, vestibular, kidney, or neuromuscular dysfunction should use TOBI Podhaler cautiously.
  • TOBI Podhaler may cause ototoxicity, or hearing loss or ringing of the ears.
  • TOBI Podhaler may aggravate muscle weakness.
  • TOBI Podhaler may cause bronchospasm.
  • Recommended monitoring of audiograms, drug levels, and kidney function should be performed.
  • An unborn baby can be harmed by aminoglycosides.

Side Effects

Cough, lung disorder, productive cough, shortness of breath, fever, oropharyngeal pain, voice change, coughing up blood, and headache are common TOBI Podhaler side effects. Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects that occur.
