What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Your doctor will determine the right Armour Thyroid dose and duration of treatment for you depending on the reason for treatment, your response to the medication, and lab findings.

Ingredients

Armour Thyroid medication is naturally derived from porcine thyroid glands. Calcium stearate, dextrose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, and opadry white are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Patients with uncorrected adrenal cortical insufficiency or untreated thyrotoxicosis should not take Armour Thyroid.

Patients who are allergic to any of the ingredients in Armour Thyroid should not take the medication.

Cautions

  • Armour thyroid has a FDA Boxed Warning against its use for weight loss. In euthryroid patients, normal daily doses do not help with weight loss, and larger doses may cause serious or life-threatening toxicity, especially when given with sympathomimetic amines that are used for weight loss.
  • Before you begin taking Armour Thyroid, inform your doctor of the following:
  • All the medications you take
  • Your allergies
  • Your medical history and current health problems
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Elderly patients and patients with chest pain or patients who are at risk for heart disease should use Armour Thyroid cautiously.
  • Patients with diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, or adrenal cortical insufficiency should use Armour Thyroid cautiously.

Side Effects

Armour Thyroid side effects are not very common; however, high doses can lead to hyperthyroidism.

If you experience bothersome or persistent side effects, contact your doctor.
