What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Teveten HCT is a fixed-dose combination antihypertensive medication containing eprosartan mesylate, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a thiazide diuretic. It is indicated for the treatment of hypertension in patients who require combination therapy to achieve adequate blood pressure control. Eprosartan blocks the vasoconstrictive effects of angiotensin II, while hydrochlorothiazide promotes natriuresis and diuresis, resulting in complementary antihypertensive effects. Teveten HCT helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular events associated with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Teveten HCT is administered orally once daily, with or without food.

  • Recommended dose: 600 mg eprosartan / 12.5 mg hydrochlorothiazide once daily
  • Dosage adjustments should be made based on blood pressure response.
  • Not recommended for initial therapy; patients should be titrated on individual components first.

Renal function, electrolytes, and volume status should be monitored periodically, especially in patients with compromised renal function or those on other diuretics.

Ingredients

Each film-coated tablet contains:

  • Eprosartan mesylate equivalent to 600 mg eprosartan
  • Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg

Inactive ingredients may include:

  • Lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, and film-coating agents

Contraindications

Teveten HCT is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Anuria or severe renal impairment
  • Hypersensitivity to sulfonamide-derived drugs (due to HCTZ)
  • Hypersensitivity to eprosartan or any component of the formulation
  • Pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters (ARBs can cause fetal injury or death)

Cautions

Use with caution in patients with electrolyte imbalance, hepatic or renal dysfunction, volume depletion, or heart failure. Monitor for hypokalemia, hyponatremia, and hyperuricemia. Thiazide diuretics may exacerbate gout and alter glucose tolerance or lipid levels. Eprosartan may increase serum creatinine or potassium, particularly when used with potassium-sparing agents or supplements. Periodic blood pressure, renal function, and electrolyte monitoring are advised. Avoid use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or renal impairment (eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m²).

Side Effects

Common and potential side effects include:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  • Increased urination
  • Headache
  • Hyperuricemia or gout
  • Electrolyte disturbances (hypokalemia, hyponatremia)
  • Rare: hypotension, renal dysfunction, hypersensitivity reactions, photosensitivity
