What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Nolvadex is an effective treatment for:

  • breast cancer in women and men that has spread to other parts of the body
  • node-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who have undergone mastectomy, axillary dissection, and breast irradiation 
  • reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in women with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) after surgery and radiation 
  • reducing the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women

Nolvadex comes in 10 mg and 20 mg tablets for oral use.

Directions

Take Nolvadex as directed by your healthcare provider. If you have any questions or concerns about the medication, talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Your healthcare provider will determine your Nolvadex dose and duration of treatment. 

Ingredients

Tamoxifen citrate is the active ingredient in Nolvadex. Carboxymethylcellulose calcium, magnesium stearate, mannitol, and starch are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Avoid the use of Nolvadex if you are allergic to the medication or to any of its ingredients.

Avoid the use of Nolvadex if you are taking coumarin-type blood thinners or if you have a history of blood clots in the legs or lungs.

Cautions

  • Nolvadex has a FDA Boxed Warning regarding the risk of serious and life-threatening events, including uterine malignancies, stroke, and blood clots in the lungs, in women with DCIS and in women who are at high risk for breast cancer.
  • Before you begin taking Nolvadex, inform your healthcare provider of the following:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical history and current health problems
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Nolvadex may lead to endometrial changes.
  • The risk of blood clots may be increased with Nolvadex treatment.
  • Nolvadex may lead to liver changes.
  • Nolvadex has been associated with second primary tumors.
  • Nolvadex has been known to cause vision problems and eye changes.
  • Harm to a fetus can occur with Nolvadex treatment. Women of child-bearing age should use effective birth control measures while being treated with Nolvadex and for 2 months after stopping Nolvadex. 

Side Effects

Bone and tumor pain, hot flashes, high blood calcium levels, swelling, distaste for food, vulvar itching, depression, dizziness, light-headedness, headache, hair thinning and/or partial hair loss, and vaginal dryness are some Nolvadex side effects. However, inform your healthcare provider right away of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
