What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

TACLONEX ointment is a topical medication that combines the active ingredients betamethasone and calcipotriene. TACLONEX ointment is prescribed to treat plaque psoriasis in people who are 12 years of age or older.

Plaque psoriasis is a dermatological condition where the skin becomes inflamed and forms circumscribed, erythematous papules that are covered with layers of silvery, shedding skin. Plaque psoriasis occurs because of abnormal immune stimulation and often has environmental triggers like alcohol, emotional stress, medications, sunburn, or certain cleaning products. Genetic factors and family history play on large role in the development of the disease.

Plaque psoriasis lesions may or may not be pruritic and are most often located on the buttocks, elbows and knees, genitals, sacrum, and scalp.

Directions

Apply a thin layer of TACLONEX ointment to the affected area once daily for up to 4 weeks or longer as directed by your physician. Wash hands after applying TACLONEX ointment. Do not cover TACLONEX ointment with dressings unless directed by a physician. Intended for external use only.

Ingredients

TACLONEX ointment contains the active ingredients calcipotriene hydrate and betamethasone dipropionate. Inactive ingredients include alpha-tocopherol, mineral oil, petrolatum, PPG-11 stearyl ether, and butylated hydroxytoluene.

Betamethasone

Betamethasone is a topical corticosteroid that works by modulating cells of the immune system and preventing inflammation and proinflammatory responses present in plaque psoriasis.

Calcipotriene

Calcipotriene is a vitamin D analog that binds to vitamin D receptors on the surface of skin cells. Activating this receptor prevents the growth of psoriatic skin tissue.
