What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

SYNVISC (Hylan G-F 20) is a medication prescribed to treat knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of the joints where the protective cartilage around the ends of bones wears down, causing pain when the bones move against each other.

SYNVISC injection can only be administered by a medical professional in a clinic, hospital, or another healthcare setting. SYNVISC should never be self-administered.

Directions

SYNVISC is administered by a healthcare professional using an aseptic technique. SYNVISC 2 mL is injected intraarterially into the knee joint once weekly for three weeks.

SYNVISC injection has not been shown to be safe for injections other than the knee.

Ingredients

SYNVISC contains the polymers Hylan A and Hylan B, which are cross-linked to form a long-chain polymer that contains repeating disaccharide units of sodium-glucuronate-N-acetylglucosamine. Hylan A and Hylan B are derivatives of the naturally occurring hyaluronan.

Hyaluronan plays a role in joint lubrication and tissue repair in joints and skin tissue. It occurs naturally throughout the body, but over time can degrade, especially in patients with osteoarthritis.

Cautions

Do not use SYNVISC if you have an allergy to hyaluronan or to avian proteins, feathers, or egg products. SYNVISC injection is made from chicken cells.

Do not use SYNVISC if you have inflammation or infection in the knee joint or surrounding skin tissue.

SYNVISC should be stored at room temperature and should not be refrigerated or frozen. Protect SYNVISC from light by keeping it in its original packaging. SYNVISC should not be used if the packaging has been opened or damaged.

Side Effects

Some of the adverse effects of SYNVISC may include:

  • Chills
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness
