Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Surolan is a prescription otic suspension indicated for the treatment of otitis externa in dogs caused by bacteria, yeast, and fungi. It combines three active ingredients—miconazole nitrate, polymyxin B sulfate, and prednisolone acetate—to deliver broad-spectrum antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory activity. Surolan is effective against pathogens such as Malassezia pachydermatis, Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, and Candida spp. The formulation helps relieve inflammation, itching, and secondary infections of the external ear canal, making it a widely used therapeutic in veterinary dermatology.
Surolan is for otic (ear) use only in dogs. Shake well before each use. Clean and dry the external ear canal before application. The typical dosing is:
Five drops into the affected ear twice daily for 7 consecutive days, or as directed by a veterinarian.
Massage the base of the ear gently after administration to ensure even distribution. Hands should be washed after application. Avoid contamination of the dropper tip with the ear or other surfaces.
Each mL of Surolan contains:
Miconazole nitrate 23 mg – antifungal
Polymyxin B sulfate 0.5293 mg – antibacterial
Prednisolone acetate 5 mg – corticosteroid (anti-inflammatory)
Other ingredients include mineral oil and liquid paraffin as carriers.
Surolan is contraindicated in dogs with:
Known hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients
Tympanic membrane (eardrum) rupture
Viral or systemic fungal infections
Before initiating therapy, verify the integrity of the tympanic membrane to avoid ototoxicity. Prolonged use of topical corticosteroids may suppress adrenal function or promote local immunosuppression. Use with caution in dogs with known or suspected hearing loss, especially in breeds predisposed to ototoxicity. Safety in pregnant or lactating animals has not been established. Not for use in cats or humans. Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes.
Possible side effects may include:
Mild local irritation or redness
Temporary hearing loss (rare, usually reversible)
Allergic reaction or hypersensitivity
Changes in behavior (secondary to ear discomfort)
Rare: systemic absorption of corticosteroid leading to polyuria, polydipsia, or immunosuppression with extended use
