What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Suprax (cefixime), an antibacterial drug, is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections, middle ear infections, pharyngitis and tonsillitis, chronic bronchitis, and uncomplicated cervical/urethral gonorrhea in adults and pediatric patients who are 6 months of age and older.

Suprax comes in 400 mg film-coated, scored tablets, 400 mg capsules, and 100 mg, 150 mg, and 200 mg chewable tablets for oral administration. It also comes in a 100 mg/5 mL, 200 mg/5mL, and 500 mg/5 mL oral suspension.

Directions

Suprax antibiotic should be taken as directed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns regarding the medication may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will instruct you on your Suprax medication regimen. Adults typically take 400 mg by mouth one time a day while pediatric patients typically take 8 mg per kg per day.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Suprax is the cephalosporin cefixime. The inactive ingredients include dibasic calcium phosphate, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, pregelatinized starch, titanium dioxide, and triacetin.

Contraindications

Do not take Suprax if you are allergic to cefixime or to other cephalosporins.

Cautions

  • Before you begin taking Suprax, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Some patients taking Suprax have developed hypersensitivity reactions such as shock and death. If a reaction occurs, Suprax should be stopped.
  • Suprax can cause Clostridium difficile associated diarrhea.
  • Aspartame, which is found in Suprax chewable tablets, are a source of phenylalanine. Because phenylalanine can cause harm to patients with phenylketonuria (PKU), the daily amount of phenylalanine from all sources should be considered before they begin treatment with the chewable tablets.

Side Effects

Suprax side effects include, but are not limited to, diarrhea, nausea, loose stools, stomach pain, indigestion, and vomiting. Inform your doctor immediately of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
