What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Sulfatrim DS is an antimicrobial medication that is used to treat certain infections, including the following:

  • Urinary tract infections
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
  • Gastrointestinal tract infections

Sulfatrim DS is available in 800 mg sulfamethoxazole USP and 160 mg trimethoprim USP tablets for oral administration.

Directions

Sulfatrim DS should be taken as your doctor has directed. If you have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Sulfatrim DS’s dosing is dependent upon the type of infection, age, and weight.

Information concerning how much you should take and how long your treatment should last will be provided to you by your doctor.

A decreased dose may be required for patients with kidney problems.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in sulfatrim DS are sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, and methylcellulose.

Contraindications

Avoid taking sulfatrim DS if you:

  • have an allergy to the medication or to any of its ingredients
  • have ever had drug-induced low platelet counts
  • have severe kidney issues
  • are taking trimethoprim and/or sulfonamides
  • have megaloblastic anemia caused by a folate deficiency
  • are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have acute porphyria

Premature babies and infants younger than 2 months old should not be given sulfatrim DS.

Cautions

  • Before taking sulfatrim DS, tell your doctor if you:
    • Take any prescription or not prescription medications
    • Have any allergies
    • Have any health conditions and your medical history
    • Are currently pregnant
    • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Sulfatrim DS can cause severe or potentially life-threatening skin reactions. Immediately get medical attention if you experience any of the following: a flat red rash; blisters; skin peeling; fever; body aches; blisters/sores/ulcers on your mouth, nose, or genitals; and eye inflammation and swelling.
  • Sulfatrim DS can cause a liver disease called fulminant hepatic necrosis, which causes symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes; pain in the upper right abdomen, abdominal swelling, nausea, and vomiting. If you experience any of these, immediately seek medical attention.
  • Low white blood cell counts can be caused by sulfatrim DS, which can cause fever, chills, sore throat, feeling weak, rapid heart rate, and fast breathing. If you experience any of these, immediately seek medical attention.
  • Aplastic anemia can be caused by sulfatrim DS, leading to tiredness, trouble breathing, pale skin, easy bruising, fever, chills, sore throat, and a general feeling of discomfort. If you experience any of these, immediately seek medical attention.
  • Low platelet counts can occur with sulfatrim DS, causing easy bruising, rash, bleeding of the gums or nose, and blood in the urine or stool. If you experience any of these, immediately seek medical attention.
  • An allergic reaction in the lungs and airways can occur with sulfatrim DS, causing breathing problems such as coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness. If you experience any of these, immediately seek medical attention.
  • Caution should be used while driving or operating machinery.
  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea can be caused by Sulfatrim DS.

Side Effects

Some of the most common sulfatrim DS side effects include, but are not limited to, the following: high potassium levels, anorexia, fungal overgrowth, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and allergic skin reactions. These are not the only side effects that can occur. If you experience side effects that are concerning or persistent, immediately talk to your doctor.
