What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Stromectol (ivermectin) is a medication used to treat certain infections caused by parasitic worms. It treats intestinal strongyloidiasis, caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, and onchocerciasis (river blindness), caused by Onchocerca volvulus. Ivermectin works by binding to nerve and muscle cells in the parasite, which paralyzes and kills it. For river blindness, it kills the young worms but not the adult worms, so treatment may need to be repeated.

Directions

Take Stromectol exactly as prescribed. Swallow the tablets with water on an empty stomach.

For strongyloidiasis, the usual treatment is a single dose of approximately 200 mcg per kilogram of body weight. The typical number of tablets is:

  • 15 to 24 kg: 1 tablet
  • 25 to 35 kg: 2 tablets
  • 36 to 50 kg: 3 tablets
  • 51 to 65 kg: 4 tablets
  • 66 to 79 kg: 5 tablets

For onchocerciasis, the usual treatment is a single dose of approximately 150 mcg per kilogram of body weight.

For strongyloidiasis, additional doses are usually not needed. However, a healthcare provider may order a stool test after treatment to confirm that the infection has cleared.

For onchocerciasis, treatment may need to be repeated every 3 to 12 months until symptoms improve.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Stromectol is ivermectin. Inactive ingredients may include microcrystalline cellulose, pregelatinized starch, magnesium stearate, butylated hydroxyanisole, and anhydrous citric acid powder.

Cautions

Before using this medication, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:

  • Any existing health conditions
  • Any allergies
  • A list of all medications currently being taken

People treated for onchocerciasis may develop a Mazzotti reaction, which is caused by the body’s response to dying parasites. Symptoms may include itching, rash, swollen lymph nodes, joint pain, fever, or a drop in blood pressure.

People who have traveled to or lived in West or Central Africa should be checked for Loa loa infection before treatment. In rare cases, ivermectin may cause serious brain-related reactions in people who are also infected with this parasite.

Nervous system effects such as drowsiness, confusion, disorientation, stupor, and, in rare cases, coma or death have been reported. Use caution when driving or performing activities that require alertness until you know how Stromectol affects you.

The safety and effectiveness of Stromectol have not been established in children weighing less than 15 kg (approximately 33 pounds).

Discuss use during pregnancy with a healthcare provider because ivermectin caused birth defects in animal studies at high doses. Ivermectin passes into breast milk in small amounts, so breastfeeding mothers should discuss the potential benefits and risks with their healthcare provider.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if there is a known hypersensitivity or allergy to ivermectin or any other ingredient in the tablets.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Stromectol may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Stomach pain

Serious side effects are uncommon. Get medical help immediately for signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling of the face or throat, or trouble breathing.

Medical attention is also needed for severe dizziness, fainting, confusion, unusual drowsiness, seizures, or vision changes. People being treated for onchocerciasis should report severe swelling, rash, fever, or eye problems to their healthcare provider.
