What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Stivarga is a prescription medication that is used to help treat metastatic colorectal cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, and liver cancer.

Stivarga is available in 40 mg oral tablets.

Directions

Stivarga should be taken as your doctor has instructed. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Stivarga’s general dose is 160 mg orally once daily for the first 21 days of each 28-day cycle. Stivarga should follow a low-fat meal. Information on how much of the medication you should take will be provided to you by your doctor.

Ingredients

The active ingredient is regorafenib. The inactive ingredients include the following: cellulose microcrystalline,croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, povidone, colloidal silicon dioxide, ferric oxide red, ferric oxide yellow, lecithin (soy), polyethylene glycol 3350, polyvinyl alcohol, talc, and titanium dioxide.

Contraindications

According to the most recent Stivarga Prescribing Information, there are no known contraindications.

Cautions

The following FDA Boxed Warning is associated with Stivarga:

  • Liver damage that is severe or fatal can occur. Monitoring of liver function should be completed before and during treatment. If liver damage occurs as confirmed by elevated liver enzymes or liver cell necrosis, Stivarga treatment should be stopped or the dose should be decreased based on how severe and persistent the damage is.
  • Before you begin taking Stivarga, tell your doctor if you:
    • Take any prescription or nonprescription medications
    • Have any allergies
    • Have any health conditions and your medical history
    • Are currently pregnant
    • Are currently breastfeeding
  • Warnings and precautions associated with Stivarga include:
    • liver damage
    • worsened infections
    • hemorrhage that can be severe or life-threatening
    • gastrointestinal perforation or fistula
    • skin issues
    • high blood pressure
    • cardiac ischemia or heart attack
    • posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome
    • impaired wound healing
    • fetal harm; effective contraception should be used during treatment and for 2 months after treatment.

Side Effects

Stivarga side effects include the following: stomach pain, fatigue, diarrhea, decreased appetite, high blood pressure, infection, difficulty speaking, elevated bilirubin levels, fever, inflamed/sore mouth, weight loss, rash, and nausea. These are not the only side effects that can occur. If you develop persistent or concerning side effects, you should speak with your doctor.
