What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Stiolto Respimat (tiotropium bromide and olodaterol inhalation spray) is used in adults for long-term maintenance of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Stiolto Respimat contains two medications that help open up the airways to allow for easier breathing: tiotropium bromide, an anticholinergic, and olodaterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist.

Stiolto Respimat is not used for treating acute deterioration of COPD.

Stiolto Respimat is not used to treat asthma.

Follow the instructions that come with your Stiolto Respimat prescription. Don't hesitate to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you have about your prescription.

Stiolto Respimat comes in an inhalation spray for inhalation use. 2.5 mcg of tiotropium and 2.5 mcg of olodaterol is provided in each puff. 

Recommended dosage:

Inhale two puffs by mouth one time a day at the same time each day. 

Ingredients

Tiotropium bromide, an anticholinergic, and olodaterol, a beta2-adrenergic agonist, are the active ingredients in Stiolto Respimat. 

Water for injection, benzalkonium chloride, edetate disodium, and hydrochloric acid are the inactive ingredients contained in Stiolto Respimat.

Contraindications

Using Stiolto Respimat without an inhaled corticosteroid is not recommended in patients with asthma.

Avoid using Stiolto Respimat if you are allergic to tiotropium, ipratropium, olodaterol, or any of the other ingredients in Stiolto Respimat.

Cautions

  • Before starting COPD treatment with Stiolto Respimat, talk to your doctor:
    • About your allergies
    • About your medical conditions
    • About all the medications you take
    • About your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Patients who have acutely deteriorating COPD, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, should not use Stiolto Respimat. Discuss your COPD with your doctor. 
  • Do not use Stiolto Respimat to relieve sudden breathing problems.
  • The recommended dose of Stiolto Respimat should not be exceeded. 
  • Severe and potentially life-threatening cardiovascular problems can occur by using Stiolto Respimat with other medications that have long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonists.
  • Severe allergic reactions can occur with the use of Stiolto Respimat. Stop using Stiolto Respimat and get emergency care right away if you have swelling, itching, rash, difficulty breathing, bronchospasm, or any other effects.
  • Paradoxical bronchospasm that may be life-threatening can occur with the use of Stiolto Respimat.
  • If you have cardiovascular or convulsive issues, problems with your thyroid, or if you are unable to take sympathomimetic drugs, use Stiolto Respimat with caution. 
  • Glaucoma can be worsened with the use of Stiolto Respimat. If you have glaucoma, use the medication with caution.
  • Urinary retention can worsen with the use of Stiolto Respimat. If you have prostatic hyperplasia or bladder-neck obstruction, use the medication with caution.
  • Low potassium and high blood sugar levels can occur with the use of Stiolto Respimat. 

Side Effects

Stiolto Respimat can cause nasopharyngitis, cough, and back pain. The medication can also cause other side effects, so call your doctor right away if you have side effects that get worse or won't go away.
