What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Solodyn ER is an extended-release formulation of minocycline hydrochloride, a tetracycline-class antibiotic indicated for the treatment of inflammatory lesions of non-nodular moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years of age and older. It is not indicated for the treatment of infections or for use in cases of nodular or cystic acne. Solodyn ER provides once-daily oral dosing, delivering therapeutic minocycline levels over 24 hours while minimizing peak-related side effects commonly seen with immediate-release formulations.

Directions

Solodyn ER is administered orally once daily, with or without food.

  • Dosage is weight-based, ranging from 45 mg to 135 mg per day.
  • Patients should swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water and remain upright for at least 30 minutes to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation.
  • Treatment duration varies, but continued use beyond 12 weeks is not recommended unless clearly beneficial and under medical supervision.

Do not crush or chew tablets. Avoid taking with antacids, calcium, or iron supplements close to dosing time, as these may impair absorption.

Ingredients

Each tablet contains:

  • Minocycline hydrochloride (extended-release) in strengths of 45 mg, 55 mg, 65 mg, 80 mg, 90 mg, 105 mg, 115 mg, and 135 mg

Inactive ingredients may include:

  • Lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and hypromellose in a tablet coating

Contraindications

Solodyn ER is contraindicated in:

  • Individuals with hypersensitivity to minocycline, other tetracyclines, or any formulation component
  • Pregnant women and children under 8 years, due to risk of permanent tooth discoloration and enamel hypoplasia

Cautions

Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction or those on prolonged therapy, as tetracyclines can cause hepatotoxicity and intracranial hypertension. Monitor for signs of pseudotumor cerebri, particularly in adolescent females. Minocycline may cause photosensitivity—patients should avoid excessive sunlight and use sunscreen. Periodic assessment of liver and renal function, CBC, and clinical response is advised during extended treatment. Drug-induced lupus-like syndrome and autoimmune hepatitis have been reported with minocycline use.

Side Effects

Common and potential side effects include:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or gastrointestinal discomfort
  • Headache
  • Skin discoloration (including blue-gray pigmentation with prolonged use)
  • Tooth discoloration (especially in younger patients)
  • Rare: autoimmune reactions (drug-induced lupus, serum sickness), pseudotumor cerebri, hypersensitivity reactions
