What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Anethal Trithione (brand name Sialor) is a prescription medication designed to treat oral health concerns through its sialogogue properties. In other words, it increases the saliva production in patients who experience side effects from other medications that cause xerostomia (dry mouth).

Dry mouth can be extremely uncomfortable. The condition may or may not be painful. It may become more difficult to eat or swallow.

Dry mouth can arise from various causes, including medications and underlying health issues. Through its salivary stimulation, Anethal Trithione fosters improved speech, swallowing, and digestion, ultimately minimizing the risk of dental decay and supporting comprehensive oral health.

The mechanism of action of Sialor is unclear, but it is thought to increase the number of muscarinic receptors on salivary acinar cells. Sialor also appears to increase substance P and alpha-calcitonin gene-related peptide, which are involved in saliva production.

Directions

The usual dosage is 25 mg by mouth three times daily before meals. If soft stools occur, reduce the dosage to 25 mg with the morning and evening meals.

It typically takes several days for the full effects to occur.

Treatment is typically daily but may be interspersed with five drug-free days per month.

The active ingredient in Sialor is Anethol trithione.
