What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Scemblix (asciminib) is prescribed to treat adults with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase (CP) and Ph+ CML in CP with T315I mutation.

Scemblix comes in 20 mg and 40 mg tablets for oral administration.

Directions

Scemblix should be taken as your doctor has instructed. Any questions or concerns that may arise can be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Recommending dosing in Ph+ CML in CP: Take 80 mg by mouth once daily or 40 mg by mouth twice daily.

Recommended dosing in Ph+ CML in CP with the T315I mutation: Take 200 mg by mouth twice daily.

Swallow the tablets whole; do not break, chew, or crush them.

Avoid consuming food for at least 2 hours before or 1 hour after taking Scemblix.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Scemblix is asciminib. The inactive ingredients include colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, ferric oxide, hydroxypropyl cellulose, lactose monohydrate, lecithin, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, talc, titanium dioxide, and xanthan gum. The 20 mg tablets also include ferric oxide, yellow and ferric oxide, red. The 40 mg tablets also include ferrosoferric oxide and ferric oxide, red.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications, or reasons why a person should avoid taking Scemblix, per the most recent Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Scemblix, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Abnormal blood cell counts, pancreatic toxicity/pancreatitis, high blood pressure, allergic reactions, cardiovascular toxicity, and harm to an unborn fetus can occur with Scemblix use. Medical care should be immediately sought if you experience any of these reactions. Use proper contraceptive methods while taking Scemblix.

Side Effects

Scemblix side effects include, but are not limited to, upper respiratory tract infections, musculoskeletal pain, headache, fatigue, nausea, rash, and diarrhea. Inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects you may experience.
