What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Ruxience (rituximab-pvvr) injection is used for treating adults who have non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, or granulomatosis with polyangiitis and microscopic polyangiitis.

Directions

A treatment plan will be decided by your healthcare provider. A healthcare professional will administer Ruxience intravenous (IV) infusion. Any questions or concerns may be referred to your healthcare provider.

Ingredients

Rituximab-pvvr is the active ingredient in Ruxience.

Edetate disodium dihydrate, L-histidine, L-histidine hydrochloride monohydrate, polysorbate 80, sucrose, and Water for Injection are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

According to the most recent Prescribing Information, there are no contraindications to Ruxience.

Cautions

  • Ruxience is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Potentially fatal infusion-related reactions may occur within 24 hours of receiving the infusion; about 80% of reactions that resulted in death occurred with the first infusion. Patients should receive monitoring; Ruxience should be discontinued if a patient develops severe reactions.
    • Potentially fatal severe mucocutaneous reactions can occur.
    • Hepatitis B reactivation that may lead to fulminant liver inflammation, liver failure, and death may occur.
    • Potentially fatal progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) may occur.
  • Before you start receiving Ruxience, discuss the following with your healthcare provider:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take, including vitamins, herbals, and supplements
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • The following may occur with Ruxience treatment:
    • Tumor lysis syndrome
    • Infections
    • Cardiac adverse reactions
    • Kidney issues
    • Bowel obstruction and perforation
    • Fetal harm; therefore, females of childbearing potential are advised to use effective contraceptive methods during Ruxience treatment and for 12 months after receiving the final dose.
  • Breastfeeding is not advised.
  • Patients on Ruxience treatment should not receive live vaccines.

Side Effects

Ruxience side effects include but are not limited to infusion-related reactions, fever, decreased lymphocytes, chills, infection, weakness, upper respiratory tract infections, nasopharyngitis, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, nausea, diarrhea, headache, muscle spasms, anemia, and swelling. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you experience worrisome or persistent side effects.
