What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Ragwitek is a prescription medicine used for sublingual (under the tongue) immunotherapy to treat short ragweed pollen allergies. As an allergen extract made from short ragweed pollen (Ambrosia artemisiifolia), Ragwitek targets the root cause of allergy symptoms related to ragweed, such as runny nose and itchy eyes, whether or not eye inflammation is present. It works by gradually increasing the body's tolerance to the allergen, helping to reduce the severity of symptoms caused by short ragweed pollen.

Directions

The standard dosage of Ragwitek is one tablet taken once daily. The tablet is placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve in the mouth. Do not swallow for at least 1 minute to let the tablet dissolve completely.

Begin taking Ragwitek at least 12 weeks before the expected onset of the ragweed pollen season, and continue daily throughout the pollen season. Take the first dose in a clinic or hospital setting to monitor for any signs or symptoms of a severe allergic reaction for at least 30 minutes. Follow the prescribed dosing schedule and consult with a healthcare professional if any concerns or questions arise while undergoing treatment. Ragwitek is not intended to provide immediate relief from allergy symptoms, but rather helps your body develop immunity over time.

Ingredients

Ragwitek is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient short ragweed pollen allergen extract derived from the Ambrosia artemisiifolia plant.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Ragwitek if any of the following apply:

  • A history of severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis related to allergen immunotherapy
  • Existing severe or poorly managed asthma
  • Prior episodes of eosinophilic esophagitis
  • Known allergies to any ingredients present in the drug

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Ragwitek (ragweed pollen allergen extract), consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Your existing medical conditions
    • Medications you're currently on
    • Whether you're pregnant or nursing
  • Be vigilant for severe, potentially fatal, allergic reactions while on this treatment. Look out for symptoms like skin hives, itching, difficulty breathing, or facial and throat swelling.
  • Should you experience any oral wounds or inflammation, it's recommended to temporarily stop the use of Ragwitek until your condition improves.
  • Ragwitek is intended for use in adults up to age 65. The medication will not provide immediate relief from allergy symptoms, so it's vital to continue with other allergy treatments while undergoing Ragwitek immunotherapy.
  • Ragwitek treatment should be carried out under the supervision of a healthcare professional familiar with potential side effects related to allergen immunotherapy.

Side Effects

Ragwitek may cause side effects in some individuals. Common side effects may include throat irritation, a prickling sensation in the mouth, and itching of the ears, mouth, and tongue,. These side effects are generally mild and may not require medical intervention.

Ragwitek may also cause more serious side effects that require immediate medical attention, such as severe dizziness, fast heart rate, cough, chest tightness, wheezing, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
