What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Pyohex is a veterinary shampoo that helps control bacterial skin infections in dogs. Its active ingredient, chlorhexidine gluconate, works by killing bacteria that can cause skin irritation, especially those linked to conditions like bacterial dermatitis. The shampoo not only targets harmful bacteria but also cleanses the skin, removing dirt and flakes. It can be used on both furry and hairless areas, and many veterinarians recommend it as part of treatment for skin infections. For longer-lasting skin protection, Pyohex can also be paired with a conditioner.

Directions

Pyohex shampoo is a medicated wash used to treat bacterial skin infections in dogs. Before applying, wet your dog’s coat thoroughly with clean water. Use about 1 mL of shampoo for every kilogram of your dog’s weight. For example, a 10 kg (22 lb) dog would need about 10 mL. Apply the shampoo to different areas of the body and massage it well into the coat. A sponge can help create more lather and ensure the shampoo reaches the skin.

After applying, leave the shampoo on your dog for 10 minutes to let the chlorhexidine ingredient fight bacteria effectively. Then rinse thoroughly with clean water until no residue remains. Typically, the shampoo is used twice a week until the skin improves, then reduced to once a week for maintenance.

Ingredients

Chlorhexidine gluconate is the active ingredient in this shampoo.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known allergy to any ingredients in this shampoo
  • Your pet has open wounds or deep skin infections
  • You're treating areas near damaged or irritated eyes
  • Your pet tends to lick excessively during treatment
  • Your pet has respiratory issues that may worsen with foam inhalation

Cautions

  • Before giving this shampoo, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Keep Pyohex away from your pet’s eyes. If foam accidentally gets in the eyes, rinse thoroughly with clean water and call your vet if you notice any changes.
  • Do not leave your pet unattended while the shampoo is on. Licking or inhaling the foam can irritate the stomach or breathing passages.
  • For deeper skin infections, your vet may recommend using antibiotics along with Pyohex to help control the infection more effectively.

Side Effects

Pyohex shampoo may cause several side effects. The most common side effects include eye irritation if the shampoo foam accidentally enters the eyes during bathing. Some animals may experience gastrointestinal irritation if they lick the foam while it remains on their coat. In addition, some animals may develop mild skin irritation at the application site.

Pyohex may cause more serious side effects that require immediate veterinary attention. Severe allergic reactions may occur, which can include serious skin reactions and breathing difficulties. Some pets may experience severe skin reactions or prolonged gastrointestinal upset that doesn't resolve quickly. If any pet shows signs of severe reactions, breathing problems, or persistent irritation after using Pyohex shampoo, owners should contact their veterinarian immediately.
