What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Propalin is a prescription veterinary medication that belongs to a class of drugs called sympathomimetics. It’s used in dogs to manage urinary incontinence, a condition where urine leaks out due to weak bladder control. The active ingredient, phenylpropanolamine, works by strengthening the muscles around the bladder and urethra to help prevent leakage. It is for dogs only and must be prescribed and supervised by a licensed veterinarian.

Directions

The usual dosage is 1 mg per kilogram of body weight, given three times a day with meals. To make dosing easier, the syrup comes with a special syringe—give 0.1 ml of Propalin for every 5 kg (about 11 pounds) of your dog’s weight. It can be given directly into the mouth or mixed with food. Although Propalin may work best on an empty stomach, giving it with meals may help reduce the chance of stomach upset.

Always measure the dose with the syringe provided and carefully follow your veterinarian’s instructions. Do not adjust the dose or stop treatment without checking with your vet.

Ingredients

Phenylpropanolamine is the active ingredient in this drug.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Urination problems caused by behavior
  • Currently taking a non-selective MAOI (a type of antidepressant medication)
  • Known allergy to any ingredients in this drug

Cautions

  • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Propalin should be given at the exact dose prescribed by your veterinarian, based on your dog’s weight. Giving too much can cause overdose and serious side effects.
  • This medication may affect blood pressure and heart rate, so it should be used with caution in dogs with heart disease. Extra caution is also needed for dogs with kidney or liver disease, diabetes, glaucoma, thyroid problems, or Cushing’s disease.
  • In young female dogs under 1 year old, your veterinarian may check for physical causes of incontinence before starting treatment. Propalin should not be given to pregnant or nursing dogs.
  • Propalin can be dangerous if swallowed by people—especially children. Always store it securely, replace the cap tightly, and wash your hands after use.
  • If someone swallows Propalin by accident, seek immediate medical help and show the package to the doctor. Overdose symptoms may include headache, dizziness, nausea, restlessness, or high blood pressure.
  • If the product gets on your skin, wash with soap and water. If it gets in your eyes, rinse with clean water for 15 minutes and get medical advice.
  • Propalin may interact with certain medications, including some antidepressants and drugs that affect the nervous system. Tell your veterinarian about any other medicines your dog is taking before starting this treatment.
  • In the rare case of overdose in dogs, symptoms may include overstimulation of the nervous system. Your veterinarian will provide supportive treatment as needed.

Side Effects

The most common side effects with Propalin are mild digestive problems such as loose stools, vomiting, or lethargy. These reactions are considered rare but can occur during treatment.

Propalin may also cause more serious problems related to overstimulation of the nervous system. These include changes in heart rate or blood pressure, dizziness, loss of appetite, seizures, or incoordination. Some dogs may also have unusual behaviors such as restlessness, hyperactivity, or aggression. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian for guidance.
