What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Procaine hydrochloride (HCl) is used as an injection that is a local or regional anesthetic for local infiltration and peripheral nerve block. It comes in 1% and 2% concentrated solutions.

Directions

Procaine HCl should be given per your doctor’s instructions.

Ingredients

The active ingredient is procaine HCl. The inactive ingredients are sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, and hydrochloric acid.

Contraindications

If you have an allergy to the medication or to any of its ingredients, medications that are similar, or to para-aminobenzoic acid or its derivatives, avoid procaine HCl.

Cautions

  • Before administering procaine HCl injection, tell your doctor if you:
    • Take any prescription or nonprescription medications
    • Have any allergies
    • Have any health conditions and your medical history
    • Are currently pregnant
    • Are currently breastfeeding
  • In case of emergency, ensure that resuscitative equipment, oxygen, and medications are available.
  • Injection of the lowest dosage is recommended.
  • Inject the medication slowly, with frequent aspirations before and during administration.
  • An increase of medication levels in the blood can result from repeated injections.
  • There should be constant monitoring.
  • Caution should be used in patients who suffer from liver issues.
  • If procaine HCl is used with a vasoconstrictor, such as epinephrine, cardiac arrhythmias can occur.
  • Procaine HCl may cause familial malignant hyperthermia.
  • Injecting procaine HCl into the neck or head can lead to reactions that are similar to systemic toxicity; this can cause confusion, convulsions, respiratory depression/arrest, and heart problems.
  • After administration of the injection, patients may experience temporary loss of sensation or movement.

Side Effects

Some side effects include, but are not limited to, restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, ringing in the ears, blurred vision, or tremors. Immediately talk to a doctor if bothersome or persistent side effects occur.
