Prestalia (Perindopril and Amlodipine)

Description

Prestalia contains two medications, perindopril and amlodipine, for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Prestalia comes in oral tablets containing either of the following strengths:

• 3.5 mg perindopril/2.5 mg amlodipine
• 7 mg perindopril/5 mg amlodipine
• 14 mg perindopril/10 mg amlodipine

Directions

Prestalia should be taken as instructed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns about the medication may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

An appropriate dose for you will be determined by your doctor and will depend on your medical conditions and blood pressure goals. Typically, Prestalia is started at 3.5/2.5 mg by mouth once a day; it may be taken with or without food. Your dose may be gradually increased by your doctor, depending on your response and tolerance to the medication.

You should not exceed 14 mg/10 mg per day.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Prestalia are an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, perindopril arginine, and a calcium channel blocker, amlodipine.

Contraindications

Patients who have had angioedema, or swelling, with other ACE inhibitors in the past should avoid taking Prestalia.

Prestalia should not be taken with neprilysin inhibitors like sacubitril. Patients should wait 36 of switching to or from neprilysin inhibitors before taking Prestalia. Talk to your doctor if you do not know whether or not you are being treated with a neprilysin inhibitor.

Prestalia should not be taken with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or kidney problems.

Cautions

• Prestalia has the following FDA Boxed Warning:
• Prestalia should be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected, as the medication can cause injury or death to an unborn fetus.
• Before you begin treatment with Prestalia, inform your doctor of:
• All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
• Your allergies
• Your current health conditions
• Your past medical history
• Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
• Heart attack or chest pain that worsens can occur upon starting Prestalia or when the dosage is increased. These occur partially in patients who have severe obstructive coronary artery disease.
• Prestalia can cause high blood potassium levels. Monitoring of potassium levels should be completed.
• The risk of angioedema is increased by taking Prestalia with mTOR inhibitors like temsirolimus.
• The ACE inhibitor component of Prestalia can cause a persistent cough that usually goes away after discontinuation of the medication.
• Prestalia can cause rare liver problems that may be fatal.
• Prestalia can cause low blood pressure. Monitoring of blood pressure should regularly occur.
• Prestalia can cause kidney problems. Periodic monitoring of kidney function should be completed.
• Prestalia can cause angioedema and other anaphylactoid reactions. Immediately seek emergency care if you develop abdominal pain or swelling of the face, arms, legs, lips, tongue, or throat.

Side Effects

Prestalia side effects include, but are not limited to, swelling, cough, headache, and dizziness. Inform your doctor immediately if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
